Meet Suzanne and the team

Dr. Suzanne Dumouchel

Strategist · Governance Advisor · Organisational Ecologist

I have spent more than twenty years working at the intersection of strategy, governance and international collaboration.

Over the years, I have worked with research organisations, infrastructures, international partnerships and distributed communities — environments where no single actor has all the answers, where authority is shared, and where complexity is part of the system rather than an obstacle to be removed.

This is what drew me to organisational strategy.

I became increasingly interested not only in what organisations want to achieve, but in what allows them to actually do it: how they make decisions, how people relate to one another, how knowledge circulates, how trust is built, and how organisations evolve when their environment changes.

What drives my work

I am interested in organisations that have ambitious purposes but operate in complex environments.

I am interested in distributed organisations because their complexity reveals something fundamental about organisations more broadly: performance cannot be designed from the centre alone. It emerges from the quality of the relationships between the different parts of the system.

I am interested in governance because governance is not simply about rules and structures. It is about creating the conditions for people to act together, make decisions and take responsibility.

And I am interested in transformation because organisations rarely fail to change simply because they lack a strategy.

Sometimes they fail because the conditions for change are not there.

These questions led me to develop The Ecology of Strategy — a way of looking at organisations as living systems, where strategy, governance, people, relationships and purpose evolve together.

Through SEPO, I bring this perspective to organisations and leaders navigating complexity, transition and strategic change.

A career at the intersection of knowledge and organisations

My professional path has taken me across science, international cooperation, Open Science, research infrastructures and organisational governance.

I have worked within the CNRS, contributed to the development of the OPERAS Research Infrastructure, and served as a Board Member of the European Open Science Cloud Association. I now lead the Open Science Service at GRICAD, the research computing and digital infrastructure centre of Université Grenoble Alpes and CNRS.

Across these different environments, one question has remained constant: How do we create organisations capable of achieving ambitious goals while remaining adaptable, sustainable and alive?

My experience includes distributed and decentralised organisations, international partnerships, European research infrastructures and large-scale collaborative programmes.

It has taught me to work across institutional boundaries, different professional cultures and multiple levels of governance — and to see complexity not only as something to manage, but as something to understand.

How I work

I work where strategy meets organisational complexity.

See the system -> Understand the organisation as an ecosystem of people, structures, resources, relationships and environments.

Design for adaptation -> Build strategies and governance models that allow organisations to evolve without losing coherence, purpose or capacity to act.

Make change possible -> Bring together leadership, collective intelligence and practical experimentation to move from intention to sustainable transformation.

This is the thinking behind SEPO.

Speaking & Keynotes

I am regularly invited to speak at international conferences, institutional events and leadership forums on governance, organisational ecology, Open Science, data governance and the future of distributed organisations.

I speak about how organisations can navigate complexity, build trust, adapt to uncertainty and create the conditions for sustainable performance.

Recent and selected speaking engagements include contributions to the United Nations Science Summit, the Weimar Triangle conference, and international events on Open Science, research infrastructures and organisational transformation.
